Tackling dementia, depression and loneliness through the power of sport

Community united in Salford through walking football tournament

On Sunday 9 October, we brought together local people and groups from the Salford community for a first - a Sporting Memories five-a-side walking football tournament event at Salford Sports Village.

The tournament was supported by Iron Mountain and included teams from Foundation 92, Age UK Trafford alongside local walking football teams Davyhulme Strollers and WFC Passed It, on a day of fun and friendly competition.

Each team included players aged between 60 to 75-years-old, with the competition starting with a group stage, as all six teams involved were drawn into two groups of three, battling it out for a place in the final. There was also an ‘exhibition’ team at the tournament from Iron Mountain that played a number of friendly games against the other over 60’s teams, but these did not count towards the overall competition due to youthful nature of their exhibition team.

After a day of brilliant walking football played in good spirits, it was the team from Foundation 92 that ended up eventual winners and collected the tournament trophy. However, no one went away empty-handed as each participant was awarded a certificate and medal for participating in the tournament.

Trevor Rollinson, Sessional Worker for Sporting Memories in Salford, who put together the brilliant day of competition alongside his colleague Viv Loder, spoke of his sense of spoke of his pride at hosting the tournament.

“Viv and I were delighted with how the day went. It was a great occasion proving that you are never too old to play the beautiful game. It was a day of fun and laughter.’’

“I’d like to thank Iron Mountain and particularly Charlie Watt who supported us to put this competition together and to all the local groups and players who came along. It made for a thoroughly enjoyable spectacle.”
