Fife Sporting Memories members and volunteers came together to celebrate the career of two Scottish athletics legends, Yvonne Murray MBE and fitness coach Stuart Hogg.

At the special event at St Columba's Church, Glenrothes, we were taken back to the beginning of Yvonne’s running career, hearing how coach Stuart transformed her from a great athlete into a record-breaking athlete at the top of her sport.

Speaking of the partnership with her coach, she said: "Stuart is like a father to me. He's been with me throughout my career, the highs and lows, and I can't thank him enough for what he did to make me the athlete I was. His focus on the finer margins in training made me stand out above the rest in competitive races. I share my medal success with him."

Stuart of course is no stranger to building success and transforming athletes, starting his fitness coaching career in football with John Grieg at Rangers, then at Dundee United and Aberdeen. Stuart, aged 81, is still coaching and imparting his vast knowledge to the first team at Peterhead FC.

“Everything I know now, I learned and coached myself. I wanted to do things differently and show people that small changes can make a big difference either on the football pitch or on the track. Yvonne was a great student and took everything I said on board. All the hard work was done by Yvonne.”

This was Yvonne’s first event in her role as an SMFS Ambassador and she thanked everyone for making it a special day for her. We hope it’s the first of many as we’re sure the Sporting Memories family across the country would love to hear more about her illustrious career. Glenrothes member Pete told us: “I remember kneeling in front of the telly willing Yvonne to victory and I never thought for a minute I would get a chance to meet her and see her medals. A special day for me.”

Thank you to Yvonne and Stuart for a great event, from everyone at Sporting Memories.
