Rugby fans from across the Sporting Memories family came together for 80 minutes of fascinating Six Nations memories, in our first ever Scrum Down event and the latest in our series of Great Sporting Memories Get Togethers.

Our good friend and supporter Alastair Hignell CBE, ex-England international and Sporting Memories Patron, was compere for the day and welcomed special guests and conversation from across the UK.

The virtual event on Zoom saw a fantastic array of rugby allegiances take part, with tartan scarves, England tops and the famous Welsh red jerseys all on show. Over 50 passionate sports fans came together, ready to share their favourite memories of the game.

Former stars re-live special moments

The event was brought to life by former players, including Scotland captain Peter Brown, British Lions and Welsh Rugby Union legend Scott Quinnell, and Leeds Tykes star Roger Pullan. We heard tales of their playing days, how they got involved in rugby and debated the differences between rugby then and rugby now. Turns out the ball is a lot easier to kick in the modern game!

We re-lived in person the famous commentary of Ian Robertson whose voice has been synonymous with the sport for over 40 years. He described Scotland’s 1990 Grand Slam win and Jonny Wilkinson’s drop goal in the World Cup Final as some of his finest ‘on-air moments’!

In true Sporting Memories style, we did some rugby-themed seated exercise and finished off with a quiz where everyone got the chance to show off their rugby knowledge. Well done to all who took part!

Our thanks to all involved in bringing this event to life. We can’t wait for the next one.
