Welcome back Corkerhill! Club relaunches with support from former Scotland defender

We were delighted to reopen our club back in Corkerhill in Glasgow earlier this week (14 September) as our Sporting Memories team also welcomed Tom Boyd to the first session.

The relaunch was a celebration of the power of community spirit and the desire to bring back our club to the neighbourhood of Glasgow, with partners and members of Corkerhill Community Hub joining our team and Tom for a special session.

Led and organised by the volunteer team for the Corkerhill club, the session began with introductions from the Sporting Memories team and local volunteers explaining the club’s return before everyone was invited to test their sporting knowledge through a quiz including questions on football and athletics.

Club members, wearing a range of sports shirts, including Celtic and Rangers jerseys, joined forces to share answers and knowledge of sports to help answer the questions – even Tom helped!

It was then time for a surprise as we connected the Corkerhill club to members from our Stornoway group via Zoom for an online meeting, where the latter shared how the club on the Western Isles came into existence and has grown since its launch as well as stories from sporting moments gone by.

Following that chat between two different clubs, it was then the chance for the Corkerhill group to asks questions of Tom Boyd about his career, spanning across both English and Scottish top-flights, before he spoke to individuals in attendance about their sporting memories throughout the rest of the session.

Reflecting on the relaunch, Jim Purvis, Group Delivery and Practice Coordinator for The Sporting Memories Foundation Scotland, said: "We have a fantastic partnership with Corkerhill Community Hub, which provides the perfect setting to host a Sporting Memories community club and to welcome back our club into the local community.

“It was a brilliant first session back and I must acknowledge the brilliant volunteer team here for bringing the community together for the relaunch event and they can't wait to get going again next week.

“It was also great to see the reaction to Tom Boyd’s appearance and we cannot thank Tom enough for his time and efforts spent speaking with all of those who came along.”
