Scottish football icons make their way to our clubs
Two of our clubs across the Sporting Memories Scotland Foundation family welcomed some special guests to their recent sessions as they heard about their journey is professional football.
Former Scotland Manager Craig Levein and former Dunfermline Athletic captain Roy Barry recently visited our clubs at St Columba’s and Dunfermline respectively to share their experiences of playing and managing in professional football.
The first appearance came from Roy, who visited our group at Abbeyview Bowling Club, where he detailed his career playing for the Pars. Roy is also good friends with Sir Alex Ferguson and famously turned down Ferguson’s offer to be assistant manager of Aberdeen. This was before the Dons when on to win the European Cup Winners Cup under the reign of Sir Alex.
At a special session at St Columba’s club, Gary Waddell, Group Delivery and Practice Coordinator for Sporting Memories Foundation Scotland, arranged for former Scotland manager Craig Levein to attend as one of the club’s members, Bobby, was a football coach to Craig as a boy!
During the session they spoke about Craig’s time alongside Bobby as a youngster at Leven Royals Boys Football Club and how from that time Craig’s professional football career blossomed, playing for Cowdenbeath, Hearts and Scotland, before going onto manage Hearts and his country.
After both visits were completed, Gary spoke of his delight in welcoming Roy and Craig to some of our recent sessions.
“It’s always nice to a mix of different session types and as part of that it is great that we can welcome some such esteemed guests as Roy and Craig to our sessions.
“They were brilliant with our members and gave some brilliant insights into their careers. I also must thank our club volunteers who help to put together these sessions and help us to connect sporting figures with our club members such as Craig and Bobby at our St Columba’s club.”
