Welcome to Gilvenbank Community Sports Hub – Fife’s latest Sporting Memories Club

by Donna Mackey, Partnership Manager, Sporting Memories Foundation Scotland

It’s an exciting time for Sporting Memories in Fife as we kick off our latest club, in partnership with Gilvenbank Community Sports Hub. Bolstered by the success of our other Fife clubs we are reaching out to sports fans in the area who are keen to talk about sport with like-minded people.

On Thursday 23 September, volunteers opened the Hub door for the first time to local people, who spent the session getting to know each other by reminiscing about their iconic sporting moments, taking part in a quiz, and doing some gentle fun exercise.

Gary Waddell (above, far left), Sporting Memories Group Practice Coordinator, says: “We are excited to launch our newest Sporting Memories Club at Gilvenbank, a club that strives to be at the heart of the community. We believe there are lots of older adults in the area who have a passion for talking about sport and who will benefit from attending a weekly group with like-minded people. The hub have been very supportive in getting this club up and running and we hope it will provide a great opportunity to build new friendships and share passions.”

Rose Duncan, from Gilvenbank Community Sports Hub, says: “We are delighted to partner with Sporting Memories to further enhance the range of activities we provide to people of all ages and backgrounds in and around our local community. We are currently transitioning from a focus purely on sports provision and participation into wider recreational and social activities, and it was easy to recognise that the Sporting Memories approach of remembering and talking about sport to support older adults complemented many of our priority outcomes perfectly. We hope that this new club will help engender greater awareness and engagement with our sports hub, and see more people appreciate the Hub and Gilvenbank Park more widely as a positive place to be.”

The club is open to all, and we welcome you to join us on a Thursday from 10.30am to midday. Hot drinks and biscuits are provided.

For more information about the club or to join up, please contact Gary Waddell at [email protected] or on 07941 123278.
