In March 2021, we announced a brand new weekly Sporting Memories Club. Students from Vale of Leven Academy (VOLA) in West Dunbartonshire were getting ready to deliver a regular online Sporting Memories Club, in a groundbreaking initiative supporting students in making a positive difference to their lives as well as those of older adults.

Abbi Pilkington, Nathan Williamson and Lucy Oliver assist as volunteers in the running of the school’s weekly Sporting Memories Club.

Mr Halkett, VOLA Pupil Support Leader and Employability Skills Coordinator – and Sporting Memories Patron – says: "This is a trailblazing example of intergenerational work with young people working with and supporting the more elderly members of the community."

To mark Volunteers' Week 2021, the pupils were presented with their volunteering certificates by Mrs Simpson, Depute Head Teacher.

"Working with the Sporting Memories Foundation Scotland has allowed me to build a relationship within an intergenerational team. Volunteering with the team has enhanced my confidence and communication skills. Knowing I am able to bring generations together to have a laugh is an amazing feeling."

Nathan Williamson (above, left)

"I have really enjoyed volunteering with the Sporting Memories Foundation Scotland as it has given me the opportunity to broaden my mind-set to the importance of building intergenerational relationships within my local community especially after the year we have just experienced."

Lucy Oliver (above, right)

"I have really enjoyed volunteering with the Sporting Memories Foundation Scotland as it has allowed me to build relationships with older members of the community and to work as part of an intergenerational team."

We extend our thanks to Abbi, Nathan, Lucy and Mr Halkett – and to everyone at VOLA who has made this Sporting Memories Club possible.
