It was a special celebration this week for one of the founding members of Kirkcaldy Sporting Memories Club, as family and friends of Jim Ross came together to mark his 90th birthday.

A footballer in the 1950s, Jim has missed only one Sporting Memories session since the Club started in May 2019 and has become a very popular character amongst the other members and volunteers with his witty banter and stories.

The session was renamed ‘James Campbell Ross: This is Your Life’ as we took him on a life journey with family photos, newspaper cuttings and stories from his playing days at St Andrews United, Dunfermline and Cowdenbeath. A talented long-striding inside right, Jim scored several hat tricks and was described as ‘hard hitting’. As a junior, his potential was spotted by Dunfermline manager Bobby Ancell and was destined to make his mark in football. So much so we found out that Jim was scouted by Liverpool, Newcastle and Southampton but amazingly he turned them down for love and to stay in Scotland.

Jim retired from football in the late 50s and became affectionately known as the ‘Pie Man’ as he delivered the pies to football grounds and events across Fife from his café. We are delighted to enjoy his company every week and we hope to hear many more stories from the great man in the weeks and months ahead.

From everyone at Sporting Memories Jim, happy 90th birthday!

Jim said: “Thank you for making the effort. I really enjoyed looking back on my life and my career. It was really special”

Gary Waddell is the group's Coordinator: “Jim has been with the group from the beginning, so we wanted to make his 90th birthday a special one. It was great to have his family with us to mark the occasion and thank you to them for providing us with all the great photos and stories. He is a great man and well loved by the group.”
