Did you know that the very first Sporting Memories Club in Scotland was established at the John Gray Centre in Haddington, back in 2013?

East Lothian has given us the platform upon which to build our community clubs and they have gone from strength to strength across the country since then. And as we look ahead to returning to our communities post-COVID we have teamed up with Ageing Well East Lothian to offer two interactive taster sessions throughout May and June so that people across the area can find out more about what we do at our Clubs.

The sessions will be led by our fantastic team of volunteers who will provide a fun, interactive session with tried and tested activities that inspire conversation and memories of sport. We will also talk you through and demonstrate some of our fantastic resources like the famous Sporting Pink and the Sporting Memories KITBag.

Donna Mackey, Partnership Manager, says: “Our Scottish Sporting Memories roots hail from East Lothian so it’s great to be able to offer these taster sessions to show local people how our activities and resources have developed and how they can make a difference to isolated older adults. We hope we can inspire new members and volunteers through the Ageing Well network to join our existing clubs and perhaps look at areas where we can set up new activity.”

Parvine Jazayeri, Ageing Well Co-ordinator, says: “We are so happy to be working in partnership with Sporting Memories. With the networks we have, we hope to reach the wider community, to encourage people to engage in these fun taster sessions. Bringing people together not only reduces isolation but offers people to interact both socially and physically. Keeping the body and mind active is crucial as we get older.”

Everyone is welcome to attend, whether you are an interested participant, a would-be volunteer or an organisation looking to host your own Sporting Memories Club. We would love you to see what we do and if you love it, maybe you could join one us at one of our existing virtual clubs before we get back to the community.
