Sporting Memories brought generations of sports fans together to celebrate memories of London 2012 in a ground-breaking project to improve the mental and physical well-being of older people.

Working in partnership with schools and youth organisations across the UK, younger people were encouraged to work with older people to capture memories of London 2012, other Olympics and Paralympic Games and sport in all its guises; helping to tackle loneliness, depression and dementia. The Sporting Memories Network is supported by Olympic and Paralympic stars Sir Steve Redgrave, Dr Katherine Grainger and David Weir, who all shared their own favourite memories of reaching the pinnacle of their sports by winning Gold.

Creating a lasting legacy of memories that are used at weekly Sporting Memories groups across the UK, younger volunteers learned about some of the social and physical challenges faced by older people, whilst receiving training and support to deliver activities and events that use London 2012 as a focus for triggering precious memories of Games gone by.
