Celebrating Our Sporting Memories Volunteers

Volunteers Week is celebrated between 1st and 7th June every year and it's a week in which the UK celebrates volunteers and says thank you to them for the contribution that they make.

At Sporting Memories Foundation Scotland we wanted to say thank you to our volunteers for their support, dedication and enthusiasm to the charity and most importantly the people who attend their groups.

There was no better way to do this that to host our very first Sporting Memories Volunteer Celebration Day which took place on Wednesday 5th June at Broxburn United Sports Club. It was the first time our volunteers had come together as a group so we wanted to do something special for them!

Our guest speakers included Kenny Clark, former top Scottish FA referee; Stephen Watt, a fantastic poet and spoken word artist who has a love for ‘Scottish Fitba’; and Karl and Ian from the Team Scotland / Commonwealth Games Archives at the University of Stirling.  Each of the guys entertained us with some fabulous stories, poems and anecdotes and I speak for us all when I say thank you for supporting Sporting Memories and making it such a memorable occasion.

And of course we tested our volunteers sporting knowledge with our ultimate quiz and we were amazed when we managed to stump some of them with questions like, ‘Which two teams compete for the Guiseppe Garibaldi Trophy?’ If you know the answer perhaps you might consider becoming one of our volunteers!

Our man in the gold jacket and compere for the day Maurice Donohue was delighted with the event, “On behalf of myself and the SMFS team, thank you to all those that attended our Volunteers Celebration event on the first anniversary of The Sporting Memories Foundation Scotland. It was great to see so many personnel present and from all different areas.

The opportunity to bring people together who have shown commitment, passion and enthusiasm towards the charity is a great way for myself and the team to formally acknowledge the good and impactful work that you all do in supporting older people enjoy their love of sport on a regular weekly basis. Thank you once again and here’s to 2020”
