Donna Mackey, Partnership Manager: ‘We really didn’t know how many would join us at our Great Get Together. In the end we had 62 participants, with Sporting Memories volunteers and members representing four nations from their homes or care setting. We were absolutely delighted. It was so well received by everyone who took part that straight away we had calls to do similar events for different occasions.’

Donna says: ‘When we began to think how we could participate in the Great Get Together, an online meeting seemed natural given that many of our Clubs have been meeting online since lockdown. But we soon had a bigger idea: let’s bring together all three nations as one Sporting Memories community – and host it from our group that meets at Kirkcaldy Rugby Club in Fife.'

Gary Waddell, who coordinated the session, said: ‘We decided to begin by raising our coffee cups to Jo Cox, and to give thanks for her work and for being the inspiration for our special gathering. We had lots of sporting chat and laughter, a hotly contested trophy challenge, and a cushion exercise session led by our volunteer Ross. At the end we sang Auld Lang Syne, holding hands across our screens. We may not win any choral awards, but it was emotional.’

Bob, a Club volunteer from Kirkcaldy, said afterwards ‘It was great to see everyone together’, while Alan from Manchester said: ‘Can we do this every week?’
