Scottish Stars Of Sport Supporting Sporting Memories
Scotland's very own sports stars David Coulthard, Liz McColgan and Sam Torrance are lending their support to an innovative project using archive images, reports and memorabilia of sport to stimulate the cognitive functioning and mental well being of older people.
Building on the positive impact Football Memories has had on people with dementia in Scotland, which has gained the support of Sir Alex Ferguson, Craig Levein and a host of former players, the Sporting Memories Network is now introducing three new sports - Motorsport ,Track & Field and Golf
To mark the launch, three new websites have been created for fans to browse the memories of stars, athletes, drivers, writers and other fans from across the world and for them to add their own memories as well.
David Coulthard, BBC TV's F1 commentator and former F1 Driver who is currently competing in the DTM series with Mercedes said :
"When I think back across my own career, I have great memories of circuits, races and the drivers I competed against. The rich history of the sport and the passion fans hold for their favourite drivers and teams should make for some great stories and discussions. I'm looking forward to seeing the fans' memories being added to the Replay Motorsport website. I wish the network every success and I am proud to support the launch"
Liz McColgan, World & Commonwealth Games Gold medallist submitted her own memory to the Replay Track & Field website in support of the network
"To receive the gold medal, in Scotland, in front of my home supporters, with that atmosphere was the absolute pinnacle of my career. The feelings I had that night were amazing and were never really replicated throughout the rest of my career. I never had that astounding support and atmosphere in any other race I subsequently ran. In some ways it was the beginning of the end because nothing ever really live up to that moment again."
Sam Torrance, Victorious Ryder Cup Captain and Player is supporting the launch
" I have so many amazing memories from my years of professional golf, the Ryder Cup being one focus of these, but also the fantastic support I always received whenever playing in Scotland. Replay Golf could benefit so many older Scottish golf fans and I'm proud to support this initiative."
