#RunWithMaurice To Fight Dementia Together

Three-time Formula 1® world champion Sir Jackie Stewart is inviting people across the globe to get their running shoes on and ‘Run with Maurice’ to fight dementia together.

On Sunday 12th March, Maurice Donohue will be taking part in the Silverstone Half Marathon as he embarks on an epic challenge. Maurice has begun running 3,650 kilometres through daily 10km runs as a tribute to Lachie Stewart.

In addition to this and to celebrate the 27 Grand Prix victories by Sir Jackie Stewart, Maurice also aims to complete an incredible 27 half marathons in a year. These will take in runs at race circuits including Oulton Park, Brands Hatch and Silverstone. Maurice hopes to get to Monza, to replicate when Sir Jackie ran with other drivers and team principles in 1973.

Maurice is a resident of West Dunbartonshire, birthplace of sporting heroes Sir Jackie Stewart and Commonwealth Gold Medal winner & Sporting Memories Foundation ambassador, Lachie Stewart. To help support the fight against dementia and celebrate the part that sport can play in this battle, Maurice is undertaking a unique series of fundraising challenges to:

  • Raise awareness of dementia and to reduce stigma

  • Raise money for both charities

  • Encourage people across the globe to get active and ‘Run with Maurice’ – either joining him on runs or virtually through their running Apps.

Funds raised by Maurice’s efforts at all these events will be divided equally between Sir Jackie’s charity Race against Dementia and The Sporting Memories Foundation.

Speaking in 2016 about his wife’s battle with frontotemporal dementia, Sir Jackie said “I have watched Helen change before my very eyes for the last two years. I of course, cannot comment on what it is like to personally have dementia, but I can talk about what it is like to live and love someone who, day by day, is determined to battle it. I hope that mine and my wife’s story encourages people around the world to join us in the ultimate race to find new treatments and hopefully a cure or preventive medicine.”

In launching ‘Run with Maurice,’ a day ahead of the 2017 Silverstone Half Marathon, Sir Jackie said “ I have wonderful memories of racing at circuits across the UK, this is a great feat Maurice is taking on. I hope it will capture the imagination of sports fans and they will get involved in the challenge and help raise funds for both charities.”

Maurice Donohue said “I am particularly passionate about two things; sport and helping to tackle dementia. My first love is distance running and helping people to get active. As a proud resident of West Dunbartonshire, I wanted to honour my sporting heroes Lachie and Jackie Stewart. I hope the challenge I’m taking on will help raise awareness of dementia, get people physically active and support the fight against dementia, celebrating the role that sport can play in this battle.
